Chaper 6: Caligus

Trekking east from Perdan, the Blod and I entered Caligan lands. We stopped at a small traveler’s inn beside a dismal bog and rested my men. I had noticed a change in them, they seemed weary of always being on the move. I couldn’t blame them, I too was feeling tired and sore, but my task had to be completed. That night I confronted Cedred about it and he confided in me that the boys were missing their homes. I told him I understood and that I probably shouldn’t have a squad of armed men following me into Light of Fountain lands anyway. I heard that there was a war going on there, and since I was so close, I thought I would see what I could do to ease the suffering of the people afflicted by the conflict.

Later on that evening a man named Revelation stopped into the inn on a routine patrol and he was gracious enough to tell me of the history of Caligus, How at one time things were very different, but Caligus was eventually smashed and Perdan gave them these lands so that their country and way of life could continue. He also told me not to eat the mushrooms around here. It seemed like a strange thing to mention, but I thanked him for his help. He left later on and my men and I ate dinner. It was standard fare, stew with some meat and local vegetables. Over dinner I told the boys that I was disbanding the Blood and that they were to go their separate ways. They seemed relieved and we ate our last meal together.

My friends left south the next day and I was sad to see them go, but my next destination was one that only I could go. I would hate to accidentally get caught in a battle where I would have to kill another human being, and the war zone to the East was just that sort of place. I packed my belongings into my pack and set out towards Light of Fountain.

Caligus was once a great realm, so the stories say, but now it is a sleeping shadow of it’s former self. Someday Caligus may prosper once more, and I would be glad, for the people there are kind and devoted. They have been tempered in the fires of fate and are strong-willed because of it.
