Claims are an aspect of politics in BattleMaster. They are region-specific, and relate to the suitability of the noble to become the (new) lord of the region to which he has a claim.

Claims can be viewed by looking at the Politics tab in region view or on a scout report.

Effects

The main effect of a claim is that it gives you a legitimate (but not factual) claim to a region lordship. Any noble with a claim on a region can be appointed by the Ruler (for Imperial regions) or Duke (for Ducal regions) without either having to meet in the region itself. It can thus save vital time in appointing nobles, and with it save gold and work.

People can be appointed with weaker claims than you, and anyone within reason can be appointed if they meet in the region with the Ruler/Duke (delete as appropriate) - however, this will usually result in a drop in regional stats such as morale and loyalty, maybe even control.

Creating Claims

Little is known about the precise mechanics of gaining a claim to a region, however, these are avenues worth pursuing if you want one:

  • Being the lord and stepping down. The peasants will remember you and grant you a claim.
  • Being a knight when the lordship is empty. Obviously, having served the region in the past, you can claim the knowledge necessary to become the new lord.
  • Taking part in the region takeover. Precisely what is needed to be done in the takeover is unknown - maybe you have to be the one to start it, or simply be there, or do work to help it along.
  • Maintenance work. If the peasants remember how you helped them with their rebuilding efforts, or your constant care and attention, they may decide you have a legitimate claim.
  • Expanding your estate in the region once. Since you've put some gold, time and effort into the region then you have a better claim and knowledge to rule it than someone who's only visits his estate to give orders and then rides away again.
  • Investing family wealth into the region.
