This is practical information on the religious structures, and it is shared by the members of the religion. An outsider would require learning from a full member of the church this information.

Holy Flames
Temples may have several different altars, constituted by different fire settings defined by their intents.

Bustum is a ceremonial furnace in where the deceased are sent back to the gods and cremated. When the local temple has such an altar, they offer the community the crematory service, along with the funeral rites. The furnace tends to be located in a room to accommodate the mourning family, allowing them to make their final sacrifices to the altar. When Busta are unavailable, funeral pyres replace the furnace.

Coctum is an oven for ceremonial preparations of food.

Igneum is a lamp or a candle used in ceremonies in the dark to provide light.

Turibulum is censer in which offerings are made, usually consisting of small flammable substances, like a piece of cloth or a small wooden figure, though, unsurprisingly, incense is a popular choice. Such altars are usually simply made of a recipient with live coal in it, though more refined versions of them exist. They can be found in almost every temple in both small and large sizes, and even in personal shrines.

Cursed Grounds
In temples large enough to have it there is an underground chamber called the "cursed grounds". It is considered an unholy place in where one risks being cursed or possessed by merely being there, where the Gods are not observing and the law of the Unholy ones applies. In such place one can murder or commit what would be a crime anywhere else, and not be judged by the gods, if one doesn't mind risking losing their own soul.
Such place is naturally always heavily locked and guarded, and rarely used. When that happens it's either for the teaching of Demonology or for applying the hardest possible punishment to condemned ones, usually in secrecy.
Hey guys, I came across this while looking through some old banners I'd done. Just thought I'd out put it out there if you're interested. -- Shenron 14:36, 11 November 2011 (CET)

I have removed the Claims section. The claims are unwieldy and rapidly get out of date. Also, why do we have a "Generals" section? We don't have a "Rulers", "Bankers", "Judges" or "Dukes" section. --Indirik 23:09, 2 May 2008 (CEST)
:I think it's supposed to be a parallel to The Ordermasters of Morek. But yeah, it might do us better to stick with Ordermaster or something else entirely. --Hystrix 04:09, 17 May 2008 (CEST)
::Yes, I can see that it is meant to mirror Morek. But my point is why are we celebrating the generals of Astrum? It is a theocracy, and the judge is the representative of the religion in the realm. Shouldn't we rather have a section commemorating them? Or the Vasilisa, as the leader of the faith? --Indirik 14:12, 17 May 2008 (CEST)
:::Yeah, I see what you mean. I'd be glad to change it up, but the title graphics either need to go or be edited by whoever made them.--Hystrix 15:52, 22 May 2008 (CEST)
Suggestions
Comparing to history, I see Astrum as a combination of Christian Crusaders which cannot be denied due to the names of the armies and a devout influence of Sanguis Astroism, and Ancient Greek culture, which is seen in the names of realms council and the "mediterranean" position on the map. That is a unusal mix, but a positive one, as we wouldn't wanna play by the history books. This page has many flaws.

My suggestions:

- the realm page has been done parallel to the one of Morek, but I find that to be uneccessary. In my opinion the section Notables of Astrum should be completely removed, and the first seven explorers linked in a new page. The official in-game text could be added in let's say the Begining Section and a link to the explorers added.

- the top banner is too big and should be scaled down a little bit. The picture Astrum_cities.jpg should also be removed and put in a new page, as it takes too much space and the realm page looks endless due to it.

- more text should be added to sections Government and History, and Strategos, Fiduciary... should be linked to a new page where nobles who held the title should be chronologicaly stated.

- Festivals and Holdays section are great RP addition, but in my opinion should be places under Culture section. Armies should also be redesigned a little. :)

- Legends are a good addition, but they should be filled with some of those RPs.

- for the Regions of Astrum a template should be made (I don't know how to do that, otherwise I would already).

- Lost Heroes can stay, but at least some text should be added. --Arakiss 07:38, 05 September 2008 (CEST)

- I would like to have a section in here for Laws and one for locations of the different Paraphernalia locations if that is acceptable of course.
--Brakus

:Personally, I dislike paraphernalia lists. They have a tendency to become outdated and inaccurate. All that info is available IG to anyone who cares to look. I don't like enabling people to be lazy just because they don't want to bother to look for themselves. Still, if you want to add one, knock yourself out. --Indirik (talk), Editor (talk) 16:13, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Shenronhttps://wiki.battlemaster.org/index.php?title=Talk:Astrum&diff=157483Talk:Astrum2011-11-11T07:34:38Z
Shenron:

The Function of Nobility
by Shin Shenron

It is a question when not raised, often inferred by various modes of discourse: why are nobles greater than peasants? For most (and rightly so,) it is a given fact that nobles are superior to commoners in everyone way. However I have begun to feel that this sentiment is not thoroughly understood. Instead of just being inherently superior to commoners, I claim that nobles are integral to the functioning of the human race. If nobles were to dissappear and our traditions were lost, humanity would quickly abscond into the darkest depths of hell. In this way, our very existence must be defined by our contrast to the rabble.

My first point will be an ode to all things great about the nobility. Even when we quarrel, those of nobility always adheres to certain standards. These standards, or more correctly; this one overarching standard is the fact that all nobles recognize the hierarchy. Even those nobles who practice misguided religion accept the basic fundamentals of our society. These funadamentals include the need for a realm, a ruler, dukes, lords, knights and most importantly; commoners below all. The very fact of the widespread recognition of this order is proof enough of our inherent greater intelligence. When we investigate the achievements of nobility, our merit becomes more obvious than ever. While the commoners have only achieved the overthrow of a region lord every now (in the midst of crises of course,) the nobility have been able to harness the rabble into great contraptions of society, bringing armies into enemy lands, order to chaos, divinity to the ignorant and knowledge to the young. Every advancement in society has been because the nobility. We are the higher caste of humanity and to this end it is absoloutely essential that our contrast to the rabble is kept sacred.

Many young nobles have often made gestures "equality." While I find this highly suspect inherently, it is important to seek the roots of this disgusting idea so they may be poisoned. First of all, there is a disctinction to be made. Some nobles want nobles abolished so all men may be equal (these ones are obviously crazy and deserve no attention) and then there are those who propose that while nobles are obviously above commoners, all nobles are then equal. The latter is the idea that I want to root out. This claim obnoxiously overlooks the very fundamental difference between nobles and commoners. If nobles are equal to nobles, and commoners equal to commoners, then where can we find the difference between the two groups. The whole point of nobility is that equality is not valued. Unlike the commoners, we nobles have a strict hierarchy that clearly separates men by rank. This is the very order to which we owe our success to; the reason we wield vast armies and govern powerful realms. The notion that we can just be "equal" is in fact equating us with commoners (though I can see this if often unintentional, just the workings of an undeveloped mind...)

Ultimately, if we are to understand the problems that we face today, we must look to our innermost principles. We must understand how we function as nobility and this order must be protected at all costs. To this end, I would encourage all young nobles reading this paper to survey your own immediate surroundings and ask yourself; "Am I, and those around me, staying true to the original tenents of nobility?" If not, then you will have likely found the root of all problems that can be found in your realm.
Shenronhttps://wiki.battlemaster.org/index.php?title=Academy_of_the_Arts/The_Art_of_Philosophy&diff=157296Academy of the Arts/The Art of Philosophy2011-10-31T10:46:52Z
Shenron:

Grand Duchy Hierarchical Legislature
The aim of this document is to render fully the concept of the "hierarchy" and make it impossible for subservices to alter the concepts of "fairnes" in order to serve their individual aims. The Grand Duchy officially recognizes the absoloute necessity of a hierarchy as the cornerstone of the existence of nobility. Following the same principle that nobles are greater than commoners, different ranks within nobility must be distinct in their powers and roles in society. Infringement of this principle is to be regarded as not only subsersive to the realm, but subsersive to the very notion of nobility.

Preface
The following clarifications are necessary to comprehend in this manner to fully appreciate what the legislature communicates and to prevent sabotage from dangerous opportunists. These definitions are the definitions that will be used in court proceedings.

Rights:
The inalienable privileges handed to a man that may not be infringed upon by any other man lest he wish to face the harsh hand of the law. Only those of noble blood are eligible to be protected under the law to this degree: only nobles have rights. The degree of rights handed to a noble increase with his rank.

Rank:
The extent of a mans power in relation to other men. In the same way that nobles are above commoners, Lords are above Knights, Dukes are above Lords and Rulers are above Dukes.

Fairness:
The consistency in which nobles of a certain rank are respected in terms of the privileges that they are entitled. In this sense it is unfair for a knight to be treated the same as a lord.

The Official Legislation
*Article 1: A nobles title is always to be used in front of his name in the public arena. In private the title may only be dropped with the nobles expressed or implied permission.
**1.1: The power to which permission is implied lies with whomever is allegedly implying it. For example if Noble A drops Noble B's title and claims it was implied, Noble B can simply deny it and Noble A is at fault.
**1.2: The use of a noble's title in sarcasm is strictly prohibited also.

*Article 2: Any nobles who appeals to the "equality of nobles" is at fault.
**2.1: If the noble honestly does not understand the implications of his words he shall simply be educated.
**2.2: If it is apparent that the noble accepts the implications of his words then he shall be required to change his stance.
**2.3: If said noble fails to do so he will be banished immediatly. The Grand Duchy offers no room to subsersives.

*Article 3: Appealing to false "rights"
**3.1:

*Article 4:
**4.1:
**4.2:
**4.3:

Customs and Traditions
Honor the "Elders"
Whenever a man has to dwell in the underground, usually miners, he never mentions the name of a Holy One after having entered cave, mine or other underground building. As he is entering a territory controlled by the Unholy Ones, the custom is to make an offering to try to appease them, chanting some prepared ritualistic invocation and addressing them as the "Elders", never by their names or epithets. The offerings are usually composed of sinful objects, like alcohol, dirty money, stolen goods, blood and such.
This custom, though tolerated in the underground, is met with swift repression when seen on the daylight, as has been reported by authorities on small groups of brigands and other kinds of criminal organizations. For these death by torture is the sentence.

Honorable Professions
Among the commoner followers of Aetheris Pyrism, professions related to fire are better seen than other ordinary ones. That way, it is not uncommon to see Smiths or even Bakers with the dignity of spokesperson of small communities, when the local Lords demand representation of the common problems.

Popular Rites
Death Communion
When for any reason a man is in the desperate position in which he decides to risk his soul in exchange of favors from the Undead Lord, possibly to try to cast away the mortal sickness of a familiar, or the plague of a region, he can turn to the Death Communion. This is a very unusual ceremony in where the requester goes out to a deserted region in the middle of a starless night, usually (but not always) with an spiritual guide, and makes an offer to the Lord of the Undead after some rituals, sacrificing (or promising to sacrifice) something very valuable to him, in order to get his favors.

Lover's Rite
The Lover's Rite is, as the name implies, a celebration of the reciprocal love between two individuals. It is an originally secular custom that gained its way into the religious traditions.
It is usually performed by a Priest, who is not unusually accompanied or even replaced by an elder of the family, and it represents the publicity of the affair, and approval of the family, church and community.
Normally performed in a celebration of the same occasion, it consists roughly of the receiving of the individual blesses from those close and above the lovers. Familiars take the chance to congratulate and approve them, vassals to pay tribute and renew their oaths, and priests, elders and suzerains to bless them.

While the ceremony of a powerful Lord is more of a display of his power, and a procession of tribute and oath offerings, a ceremony of a relatively-powerful commoner or low noble might look more like a family celebration, with the blessing of the lovers given by the suzerain Lord, who will be heavily praised and celebrated in the ceremony, often to the point of eclipsing the lovers and becoming the center of the attentions.

Temple Rites
Purification Rite
When one has committed a very serious sin, or some kind of very condemnable act, he can participate in a ceremony for the purification of his soul and forgiving in the eyes of the Gods. In it he is forced to wear only a white sheet covering his naked body, proceed to soil all his body with dirt (paying special attention to the hair), then taking out and burn the sheet. If the crime is specially serious, cutting or even shaving the head is required. The final step is taking a bath in the pools of the temple and, once clean, placing a monetary value in an altar. Such value is considered an offering to the Gods, and is calculated to be equal or similar to the amount required to compensate the offended. After the ceremony is complete and the offended has received the judged compensation, the penitent subject is considered to be free of sin, with his soul clean.

Even by not having explicitly sinned, it is advised that everyone participates in a yearly Purification Ceremony. These much softer ceremonies usually consist of only dirtying a bit a sheet worn over the clothes, burning it and lightly wetting the head, before placing an offering in the temple.

In large enough temples, nobles have access to artificially heated baths, and private quarters to perform the ceremonies only accompanied by the priests and those they want to be with. Commoners tend to perform them on summer, collectively, on large groups in the open fields, near water sources, usually with a few or a single priest supervising them.

Wedding Rite
In Aetheris Pyrism a wedding is considered the holiest ceremony of fertility possibly made, a contract that cannot be broken without very serious consequences. Nobody is forced to wed, but doing so greatly testifies for one's respect for the divine, and is a major honor source.

The wedding ceremony is divided in three steps:
The contract phase involves the elaboration and temple approval of each party's promises. Those can range from eternal or temporal union, one or as many children as possible, or other more refined dealings. Peasants are usually only allowed to sign a standard contract of union until death or infertility, and envisioning as many offspring as possible.
The celebration phase is an event for the publicity of the union (and often a display of power), with public banquets by wealthy nobles, larger-than-usual family reunions by commoners, festivals for important Lords, or simply a private gathering with friends by co-conspirators.
The last phase is the consumption of the love. After a short ceremony performed by a priest, the lovers are left alone to consume the act in a pool, symbol of purification. Wealthy nobles can enjoy artificially heated indoor pools in large enough temples, or an improvised and consecrated ambient for the same purposes in the lack of it. Peasants on the other hand are left to less dignified ceremonial places, like a local river, spring or generic water-source, and in the lack of it a simple home-bath or even just a short water-spraying symbolic ritual.

The Wedding Rite should not be confused with the Lover's Rite. Its objective must always be that one of procreation and child-bearing. It is not as much a contract of love, as it is a contract of fertility and lineage preservation. The weds should not necessarily be in love, or be exclusive lovers, as long as they do perform their reproductive and child-support obligations.

Temple Structures

Turibulum is censer in which small offerings are made, usually consisting of small flammable substances, like a piece of cloth or a small wooden figure, though, unsurprisingly, incense is a popular choice. Such altars are usually simply made of a recipient with live coal in it, though more refined versions of them exist. They can be found in almost every temple and even in personal shrines.

Shin, The Fissoan Backbone
Being the youngest of three brothers, Shin had always felt an urge to help his older brothers, and when Kaennji became the King of Pian en Luries, he felt obliged to join and help in the courts. After Kaennji's reign was over, Shin returned to the Shenron estates, this time to be taught by his father, Kazuma about war tactics. The reason he had left was mainly his distast for the new Lurian leader, Queen Alanna. After watching the Lurian wars from the sidelines, Shin was very interested in the art of battle. When word reached him of the secession of Giask from Pian en Luries: Shin, with goodbyes to his family, left for the realm of Giask.

Shin's reception into Giask was very impressive, though the reputation of Kaennji's former reign of Pian en Luries was certainly a help politically, as his cause against Alanna was very similar to the to the then current plight of the Giaskans. After eleven days in the realm, he was elected General to the realm who was then desperate for a capable military leader. Shin, learned but inexeperienced, took to the task with enthusiasm and it was this trait that allowed his fellow councillors to overlook his inexperience and wish to teach him instead. While Shin turned out to be a fair general, the overwhelming barrage of monsters eventually let to the defeat of Giask and Shin was forced to leave the realm. He followed his King, Loathin Fantom, to the Grand Duchy of Fissoa.

When Shin first joined the Grand Duchy, he found the realm annoyingly apathetic. He went about rallying the old Giaskans and asked for political support. After running an aggressive campaign, Shin successfully assumed the position of High Chancellor, the realm's judge. There was no activity for a while but eventually arose an issue that woke the realm up from apathy. The count of Nuas, Lord Raych, had sent the commoner Anders into Shin's dungeons and demanded he be punished. When Shin found a nice sum of gold on the commoner, he took the opportunity to take the gold while justifying as a punishment. This caused a prominent lord, Lord Skynderbau Melphrydd, Earl of Drowenton. The Earl rightly pointed out that Shin had taken the adventurers gold to line his own pockets. Unfortunately for Skynderbau, Shin was able to use the Earl's excessive solidarity for commoners as a very powerful weapon against him. Using this line of thought, Shin rallied the nobility against the Earl.

Because of this Skynderbau, again rightly so, became very defensive as he felt his position within the duchy may become compromised. To this Shin finally felt some guilt, while the young Shenron had never felt bad about furthering his own matieral ends, he did have some moral objections to trampling the career of another. To this end, Shin drafted a new legal document that successfully met the interests of all parties. This allowed Shin to gain his reputation as true "senior" voice within the realm.

After this event Fissoa continued on it's apathetic course with only Shin and Skynderbau participating in council discussion. With this trend Shin and Skynderbau started to become the de facto organizer within the realm. Because of this, Shin felt confident in approaching Skynderbau about introducing greater change into the realm.
Description
Shin is 5'11' feet. Out of the new generation Shenron brothers: Maru, Kaennji and Shin. Shin would certainly be the most cunning. While ambitious would not be the correct word to describe him, Shin definitely exhibits a certain amount of cutting intelligence in his discourse. His personality could be described as ruthless when he has decided on his objectives. Some would call Shin a "realist", while others would simply dismiss him as a "manipulator." Ironically Shin gained his biggest influence from Luyten Dell: the man who raised his brother. In this way, Shin eventually matured to become a very conservative noble, a man of order.

Personality Traits
* Determined, Shin has been known to pursue his tasks till they are complete, he is not satisfied with less.

* Realistic, Shin is realistic thinker and is well known to never set expectations for himelf that he knows he cannot complete.

Flamma
Literally translated as "flame", the concept flamma is used to designate the spiritual essences, the immaterial beings of both the spiritual and mortal worlds.

Imus Flamma
The imus flamma is the interior/innermost flamma of a living being: its soul. It is thought to be made of the same essence as the gods themselves, immortal and transcendent. It is thought that through the cultivation of one's imus flamma does one get closer to the gods, both in life and in the afterlife.

Exter Flamma
Not only there is in the living a presence of the flamma in the mortal world. Signs of it can be seen everywhere: in the humidity, in the warmth and even in the nourishment. Such presence, much more subtle, is called the exter flamma. These are seen as the lower spirits residing in the things and objects. These lower spirits have their own personality, and can take offense if disrespected. For example, committing impure acts in the area might make diseases spread or turn the living infertile if the local spirits are angered. Certain spirits, like the ones of the fire and certain alchemical compounds, are normally always angered, so they will show themselves hostiles no matter how respectfully they are treated if one gets too close to them.

There are places in where the spiritual world touches the mortal, and there can been sensed the presence of an uncommon, purer perhaps, aura of the exter flamma. These can be the souls of those who already departed, usually found in family shrines and temples, or the essences of very strong lower spirits, found in sacred places, commonly in unusual natural accidents, not rarely home of a shrine or temple themselves.

Soul Dualism
The flamma is made of two principles, each of which autonomous spirit beings in their own right.

The favilla could be translated as the personality, the 'self'. A man can live temporarily lose its favilla, such in certain cases of unconsciousness and trance-like states, in where the favilla leaves the body for various reasons. It is thought that the deeper one sleeps, the less attached its favilla is to the body. Evil spirits can take advantage of that to replace a man's favilla with its own, creating what are known as spirit-possessions.

The subo can be roughly translated as the life, breath, warmth or stamina. It's the raw principle of material life, without which a body cannot survive.

It is debated where an Undead has lost their favilla and/or their subo, or if they have had them simply corrupted them.

The Natural Order
Everything in this world is a member of a caste. The higher castes rule over the lower ones, in order to preserve the natural balance. From the lowest to the highest, this are the castes:

Things
Those that are. They make up all the material things in the world, and provide it with substance.

Beings
Those that live. They make up all the moving things in the world, and provide it with life.

Animals
Those that sense. They make up all the sensing things in the world, and provide men with their work, products and ultimately with their mortal vessels.

Humanity
Those that feel. They make up all the feeling beings, that is, the men. They work under the leadership of their superiors to ensure the Gods way is preserved.

Nobility
Those that reason. They make up all the noble blooded men, whose divine mandate gave them the ability to reason and govern their passions. Their task is to guide humanity towards the Gods' way, and be an example for their inferiors.

Champions
Those who bring divinity upon the world. They are a select group of divinely-touched men who have came into closer communion with the spiritual world. They serve as the bridge to the Spirits, to have the will of the Gods known.

The Spiritual Order
Like the natural world, the spiritual has its own order. There are castes that determine their spiritual powers, and the worship that its due to them by the mortals. From the lowest to the highest, this are the castes:

Ancestors
Those who watch over their living offspring, even after their deaths. Even the commoners have ancestors, who they ought to pay the due respect.
The worship of the ancestors occurs regularly as a duty to show respect (lack of which would trigger the anger and curse from the deceased), and occasionally to ask for personal aid in important tasks (examples: courage in the battle, a steady hand in a duel, inspiration for writing, wit for a debate).
Lower Spirits
They are the lowest of the divine beings and a tool of the Gods. They are guardians of divine places and objects in the mortal realm, and the dealings with them are not advised but to the proficient and spiritually trained ones, for they might be extremely dangerous to the common mind and heart.
They can be mischievous, benevolent or plainly evil. Though dealings with them are not recommended, often men will make pacts with them, sacrificing something (examples: sacrifice an animal to request good weather for the ships, throw treasure into a natural pool to ask protection in a travel, burning food to tribute the spirits of plague to leave).

Saints
The Heroes who have passed away and transcended mortality, who occasionally return to grant their graces upon the world. They live in the Solar Realm along with the rest of the higher divine beings, enjoying the after-life of the Heroes.
Saints will be prayed for the most varied reasons, in order to request their aid whenever should they pay visit again to the mortal realm (examples: pray for a daughter to find a rich husband, ask for intervention to grant a good harvest, plea for the saint's intervention to get the favors of the gods in a battle).

Higher Spirits
The highest grade of divine presence a human mind can bear to meet, only the highest spiritual authorities have contact with such beings. They are the messengers of the Gods, who enforce their will. The higher spirits' nature and deep motivations are beyond the human comprehension, and yet they are the higher we can achieve to communicate with.
They are very rarely worshiped directly, but rather are object of communion by the clergymen, who attempt to gain indirect access to the Gods through them. This is done in the presence of stars, through deep states of meditation, and altered states of consciousness, ofter induced by the aid of natural substances.

Gods
The divine ones, creators and rulers of all. Their will is obscure for us simple minds, but through effort and the aid of those above us we are able to get hints of it. These we follow.
The Gods are usually worshiped in every aspect of the daily life, being in carrying a holy symbol, dressing in an appropriate manner, thanking for the everyday graces or holding a festival in the Gods' (or in a particular God's) honor. Though pleas might eventually happen, trying to negotiate wit or ask for things to the Gods is considered extremely offensive and dangerous.
